Mount St. Mary’s men fall to No. 20 Iowa State, 73-55

Monte Morris had 18 points and Matt Thomas added13 to lead the 20th-ranked Iowa State men’s basketball team to a 73-55 win over Mount St. Mary’s. The host Cyclones (2-0), who have won their first two games by an average of 30 points, held the Mountainee­rs (0-2) to 26.6 percent shooting from the field. Mount St. Mary’s (0-2) got within 10 early in the second half, but six Cyclones scored during a 15-1 run that put the game out of reach. Iowa State outrebound­ed Mount St. Mary’s 50-38, but shot just four of 16 from 3-point range. Elijah Long, the brother of Iowa State’s Naz Mitrou-Long, had 19 points to lead the Mountainee­rs. MORE MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: KaVaughn Scott scored 14 points and James Fives added 13, both off the bench, to lead host Loyola Maryland to a 79-66 win over Division II Millersvil­le (Pa.). Scott made five of eight shots while Fives made four of five as the Greyhounds shot 54.7 percent from the field. Andrew Kostecka had 11 points and Chancellor Barnard (Glenelg Country) added 10 for Loyola Maryland, which held the Marauders to 38 percent from the field. … Shane Hammink and Alec Peters combined to score 43 points as Valparaiso built a 16point lead in the first half and cruised to a 78-58 win over Coppin State, its third win in four nights, at the MGMGrand Main Event in Las Vegas. The Crusaders shot 45.2 percent from the field and hit five of 24 from behind the arc. Terry Harris Jr. (City) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Eagles (0-2). COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Navy quarterbac­k Will Worth was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll. NHL: CSN Mid-Atlantic announced Friday that Capitals game broadcasts, as well as all pregame and postgame shows, will be available to stream live on CSNmidatla­ntic.com and the NBC Sports app for authentica­ted CSN Mid-Atlantic cable or satellite subscriber­s. The service debuted for Saturday night’s loss to the Hurricanes. BASEBALL: Washington Nationals senior adviser of Player Developmen­t Donald “Spin” Williams was named the Mike Coolbaugh Award winner, an honor given by Minor League Baseball to “an individual who has shown outstandin­g baseball work ethic, knowledge of the game and skill in mentoring young players on the field.” In 2008, Coolbaugh was in his first year of coaching for the Tulsa Drillers when he was killed by a line drive. He spent 17 years as a minor league player and appeared in 44 major league games.
