Mor­gan men post 1st win, 88-73 over Wilm­ing­ton

Win­less Cop­pin State beaten by BYU, 96-59

Phillip Carr scored 21 points and pulled down 13 re­bounds and Mor­gan State cruised to an 88-73 win over Di­vi­sion II Wilm­ing­ton on Thurs­day night.

It was the first win for the host Bears, who had lost their first two games of the sea­son.

Carr fin­ished an ef­fi­cient 8-for-11 from the field. David Sy­fax also fin­ished with 21 points for the Bears, who shot 50.8 per­cent from the field while lim­it­ing Wilm­ing­ton to 35.6 per­cent.

Ti­wian Kend­ley added 19 points, 10 re­bounds, and six as­sists for Mor­gan State.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek led all scor­ers with 23 points for Wilm­ing­ton to go along with six re­bounds. Nick Richards added15 points for Wilm­ing­ton.

Kend­ley hit a 3-pointer 11 sec­onds into the game and the Bears raced out to an early 10-1 lead. They con­tin­ued to pile on, ex­tend­ing the lead to 41-20 with 3:22 left in the open­ing pe­riod.

BRIGHAM YOUNG 96, COP­PIN STATE 59: Fresh­man De­juan Clay­ton scored 11 points, but the vis­it­ing Ea­gles (0-4) fell to the Cougars (2-0).

BYU’s bench outscored Cop­pin State’s 33-13. The Ea­gles had a sea­son-high 39 re­bounds.

Women

MOR­GAN STATE 79, WASH­ING­TON AD­VEN­TIST 28: The host Bears (1-1) opened with a 10-0 run and led 25-6 af­ter the first quar­ter to roll past the Shock (0-7).

Four Mor­gan State play­ers scored in dou­ble dig­its: Tykyrah Wil­liams (22 points), Lexus Spears (15), Braen­nan Far­rar (14) and D’Jhai Pat­ter­son-Ricks (10).

TOW­SON 69, WAG­NER 40: The Tigers (2-0) used tough de­fense to limit the host Sea­hawks (1-2) to sin­gle-digit scor­ing in three of the four quar­ters.

Raven Bankston and Sianni Martin led the way for Tow­son in scor­ing. Bankston had 16 points and Martin had 15.
