Morgan men post 1st win, 88-73 over Wilmington

Winless Coppin State beaten by BYU, 96-59

Phillip Carr scored 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Morgan State cruised to an 88-73 win over Division II Wilmington on Thursday night.

It was the first win for the host Bears, who had lost their first two games of the season.

Carr finished an efficient 8-for-11 from the field. David Syfax also finished with 21 points for the Bears, who shot 50.8 percent from the field while limiting Wilmington to 35.6 percent.

Tiwian Kendley added 19 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists for Morgan State.

Tyaire Ponzo-Meek led all scorers with 23 points for Wilmington to go along with six rebounds. Nick Richards added15 points for Wilmington.

Kendley hit a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the game and the Bears raced out to an early 10-1 lead. They continued to pile on, extending the lead to 41-20 with 3:22 left in the opening period.

BRIGHAM YOUNG 96, COPPIN STATE 59: Freshman Dejuan Clayton scored 11 points, but the visiting Eagles (0-4) fell to the Cougars (2-0).

BYU’s bench outscored Coppin State’s 33-13. The Eagles had a season-high 39 rebounds.

Women

MORGAN STATE 79, WASHINGTON ADVENTIST 28: The host Bears (1-1) opened with a 10-0 run and led 25-6 after the first quarter to roll past the Shock (0-7).

Four Morgan State players scored in double digits: Tykyrah Williams (22 points), Lexus Spears (15), Braennan Farrar (14) and D’Jhai Patterson-Ricks (10).

TOWSON 69, WAGNER 40: The Tigers (2-0) used tough defense to limit the host Seahawks (1-2) to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters.

Raven Bankston and Sianni Martin led the way for Towson in scoring. Bankston had 16 points and Martin had 15.
