Simpson named CAA’s top offensive rookie in football

Towson redshirt freshman Shane Simpson was named the Colonial Athletic Associatio­n Offensive Rookie of the Year in a vote by the league’s coaches. Simpson also was named to the AllCAA first team as a kick returner. He was joined on the first team by senior punter Jake Ryder. Wide receiver Christian Summers was selected to the second team, and wide receiver Andre Dessenberg, defensive back Monty Fenner and kicker Aidan O’Neill were named to the third team. Simpson, who rushed for 784 yards and three touchdowns on 141 carries, is the third Tiger to earn the top offensive rookie honor, joining fellow running backs Terrance West (2011), a Northweste­rn High alumnus now with the Ravens, and Darius Victor (2013). Simpson averaged 26.9 yards on 34 kick returns and led the CAA in all-purpose yards, with 166.8 a game. WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY: Elizabetht­own sophomore Colleen Kernan (Westminste­r) made the All-Landmark Conference second team. BASEBALL: Mount St. Mary’s senior pitcherfir­st baseman Jordan Lawson, senior first baseman Tyler Post, senior catcher Will Enrico and junior outfielder Mitch Sgrignoli were named captains. WRESTLING: Ohio State junior Kyle Snyder, an Olympic champion from Woodbine, was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. MEN’S SWIMMING: Frostburg State junior Christian March (Westminste­r) was named Capital Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week. WOMEN’S SWIMMING: Frostburg State junior Macey Nitchie (Bel Air) was named CAC Swimmer of the Week. WOMEN’S FENCING: Johns Hopkins won all four of its bouts and Austin Young became the winningest coach in program history Saturday at Haverford’s Dan Arnstein ’09 Invitation­al. Young has 100 wins in eight seasons. James Murray (2002-2009) held the previous record.
