Sister Helen Marie Glaser, principal

Sister Helen Marie Glaser, a former Mount de Sales Academy principal, died of congestive heart failure Saturday at St. Agnes Hospital. She was 58.

Born in Nashville, Tenn., she was the daughter of Jerome Glaser and Helen Hunley. She attended Nashville’s St. Henry School and was a 1976 graduate of St. Cecilia Academy.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1980. She then taught in Newport News, Va., and at the Overbrook School in Nashville.

In 1983, she entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia and professed her vows in 1985. She became an administrator and teacher in schools staffed by her order in Tennessee, Alabama, Colorado — and at Mount de Sales in Catonsville, where she was principal from 1994 to 1999.

She later earned master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and Providence College. She then returned to Mount de Sales, where she had been teaching religion.

A memorial Mass will be offered at 8:30 a.m. today at Mount de Sales Academy’s Pistorio Sports Complex, 700 Academy Lane in Catonsville.

Survivors include her mother, Helen Glaser Yates of Nashville; three sisters, Leigh Glaser Wolfson of San Francisco and Christian Glaser and Edith Glaser, both of Nashville; and a stepsister, Julie Yates Taylor of Chattanooga, Tenn.
