Five fire deaths in a week more than doubles Baltimore’s total this year

Four young children and a 90-year-old woman have died in fires in Baltimore in the past week, more than doubling the number of fire deaths in the city this year in the final month. The most recent victim was Polly Taylor, 90, who was rescued from a burning home in the 400 block of Denison St. in Lower Edmondson Village in Southwest Baltimore about 4:40 p.m. Saturday, fire Capt. Roman Clark said. Taylor was taken to a hospital, where she died of smoke inhalation Sunday morning, Clark said. Earlier Saturday, Kamarl Ferrell, 10, and Tylynn McDuffie, 1, died in a fire about 1:55 a.m. in the 2400 block of Dorton Court, Clark said. The cause of the children’s death is pending an autopsy by the medical examiner. A 27-year-old and 4-year-old were also injured. Neighbors told fire officials they jumped from the burning house. It was not immediatel­y known Sunday if or how the victims are related. The fatal fires Saturday came just days after two other young children — brothers Nigel Ramirez, 3, and 9month-old Exekial Ramirez — died in a burning home in the 600 block of N. Clinton St. in East Baltimore. Clark said nine people have died this year in fires. Family members of the deceased could not be reached Sunday. Officials continue to investigat­e Sunday and didn’t know what caused the deadly fires. S. Hanover St. about 1 a.m. and began shooting. Police said there had been a “disagreeme­nt,” and the man was removed from the bar by security. Three women, ages 21, 32, and 49, and two men, ages 30 and 42 were injured. They were taken to hospitals for treatment, police said. Their conditions were not known. Police did not give any additional informatio­n about what transpired before the shooting. A manager who answered the phone at the bar Sunday said she wasn’t working when the incident happened and the owner wasn’t available for comment. About 11:10 a.m., police were called to Westwood Avenue and North Carey Street, where they said they found the man suffering from a gunshot wound. No other details were immediatel­y available.
