Explosion another example of city leaders’ failure

- Michael Buttner, Bel Air

The sinkhole/explosion on Eutaw Street is a sign of the failure of Baltimore City leadership over the years to take care of one of their major tasks: constantly updating the infrastructure (“Downtown Baltimore street still closed after steam pipe explosion,” June 21). Instead what have they given us? Buying votes with giveaway programs, some of which are for those who are not citizens. Buying big business with tax breaks for years, massive amounts of money and false promises of how the return for the billions will be beyond belief. That they certainly have been. In return, these politicos got large amounts for their elections. They used the city to climb up the ladder so they could destroy the state as well.

To allow the infrastructure to fall into such disrepair is, I believe, criminal. But it is only a symbol of the deeper ills that these “leaders” have allowed to decay: the school system; the police, fire and teachers’ retirement funds; the criminal justice system; the chemical abuse treatment system, etc. Instead of being re-elected, they should be in jail.

Because of these self-concerned politicos, gangs are at war; neighborhoods are in decay; murder fills the streets; jobs run from the city, and the tax base is overburdened. People of Baltimore, wake up! It is time nor for useless riots, but a revolution. Throw the bums out.
