Marlins: OF Giancarlo Stanton’s eighth-inning single off RHP Max Scherzer broke a tie and helped the Marlins defeat the Nationals 2-1 on Wednesday. Stanton’s hit was one of only two for the Marlins, who were held hitless by Scherzer through 7 innings. A wild pitch scored the Marlins’ first run and C A.J. Ellis’ infield single was their other hit. Scherzer was bidding for his third no-hitter.
Royals: CSalvador Perez hit his first career grand slam, connecting in the eighth inning to rally the Royals over the Red Sox 6-4. According to ESPN Stats and Information, Perez was the first Royal to hit a grand slam in the eighth inning or later with the team trailing since Frank White in 1986. The Royals have won nine of 11 and moved within a game of .500.
Rays: OF Mallex Smith had a pair of singles to extend his hitting streak to 12 games and also tagged out the majors’ basestealing leader, Billy Hamilton, after a lengthy rundown as the Rays defeated the Reds 8-3. 3B Trevor Plouffe and 2B Taylor Featherston both homered for the Rays, while OF Steven Souza Jr. and 1B Logan Morrison each drove in two runs.
Cubs: Addison Russell’s wife filed for divorce nearly two weeks after the Cubs shortstop was accused of hitting her. Melisa Reidy-Russell is seeking full cus- tody of the couple’s young son along with child and other support.
Dodgers: SS Corey Seager hit three home runs in a 12-0 win over the Mets on Tuesday, becoming just the fourth player in major-league history to have a pair of three-homer games before his 24th birthday. Red Sox OF Mookie Betts and former players Juan Gonzalez and Boog Powell previously accomplished the feat. Seager also went deep three times against the Braves on June 3, 2016.
Diamondbacks: The Diamondbacks signed INF Pavin Smith, the seventh overall pick in this year’s draft, and C Daulton Varsho, the 68th overall pick.
