AROUND THE HORN

-

Marlins: Incoming part-owner Derek Jeter asked team President David Samson to fire four Marlins luminaries because Jeter didn’t want to do it, the Miami Herald reported. Jeter wants to dump Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, Jack McKeon and Jeff Conine, all special assistants to Samson or owner Jeffrey Loria.

Twins: Max Kepler and Brian Dozier homered and Byron Buxton had a two-run double in a 7-3 victory over the Tigers as the Twins strengthened their grip on the second AL wild card. Kyle Gibson (12-10) allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings. Nicholas Castellanos and Ian Kinsler homered for the Tigers, who dropped to 4-18 this month.

Red Sox: Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer as the Red Sox extended their AL East lead to four games by overcoming Scooter Gennett’s fourth grand slam of the season for a 5-4 victory over the Reds. The Red Sox have won 12 of 15, keeping the Yankees at bay while moving a season-high 25 games over .500 (89-64). Rick Porcello, who has lost 17 games, lasted a season-low four innings.

Blue Jays: Ryan Goins pulled off a hidden-ball trick and hit his second career grand slam in an 8-1 victory that ensured the Yankees had to wait at least one more day to clinch a playoff berth. Goins pulled the trick on Todd Frazier, who had doubled leading off the third.

Cardinals: Randal Grichuk scored after an error by Pirates SS Jordy Mercer, capping a frantic ninth-inning rally that lifted the Cards over the Pirates 4-3. The playoff-chasing Cardinals won their fifth straight. Down 3-2 in the ninth, Jedd Gyorko delivered a pinch RBI single. After Tommy Pham singled, Grichuk ran for Gyorko at third. He scored when Mercer misplayed Dexter Fowler’s sharp ground ball.

Mets: RHP Noah Syndergaard will make a one-inning start Saturday against the Nationals in his first major-league game in nearly five months. He has been out since April 30 because of a torn lat muscle. RHP Matt Harvey will take over in the second.
