Bruins give ’Cats bit of own medicine

Broadneck’s Davis throws for three touchdowns in romp over county foe

It’s a common perception that no football team in Anne Arundel County tends to throw the ball more than Arundel does under coach Chuck Markiewicz.

When Broadneck visited Gambrills on Friday, it took a page out of Arundel’s playbook. Shane Davis ran for one touchdown and tossed three more, completing 17 of 28 passes for 254 yards as the Bruins whipped the Wildcats, 45-9.

Nicky Orofino’s 28-yard field goal opened the scoring for the Bruins after they stalled on their initial drive. After forcing a second consecutive Wildcats punt, the Bruins marched up the field, mainly on the back of Jason Carcamo, who ran for 40 yards on the drive, including a 7-yard touchdown plunge up the middle.

Carcamo finished with 217 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, showing the Bruins could run the ball as well as they passed it.

Arundel got right back into the game after Darius Hunter ran a counter play left and cut through a hole and burst into the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 10-7. Hunter finished with 112 yards on 20 carries.

The Bruins extended their lead to 17-7 when Davis hit Ben Hudson for a 14-yard touchdown with 5:30 to play in the half.

Arundel got an opportunity to cut into the deficit after forcing a Bruins punt late in the half, but Ryan Sedgwick’s first pass was picked off by Noah Genovese, who was a presence defensively all night.

On the next play, Davis just missed hitting Ethon Williams in the end zone for a touchdown, but after an illegal shift call on Broadneck, essentially the same play was called again for the pair, who connected for a 32-yard touchdown.

The teams traded possessions to start the second half before the Wildcats got a spark when Eddie Jones took an end-around on the first play of Arundel’s second drive for 30 yards, augmented by a 15-yard face-mask penalty.

The drive appeared to stall, however, when Ryan Sedgwick’s fourth-down pass was intercepted in the end zone by Alexander Roland. But the Bruins were unable to avoid stepping out of bounds, and a loose fumble rolled out of the end zone for an Arundel safety.

The ensuing safety kick hit an Arundel player’s shoulder and was recovered by Broadneck at the Arundel 35-yard line in a crazy turn of events that gave Broadneck the ball back after they yielded two points.

The Wildcats ramped up the pressure on defense, and after Shane Davis was hit with an intentional-grounding penalty, the Bruins were forced to punt from their own end zone, setting up Arundel from the Broadneck 42-yard line, but could not capitalize and were forced to punt.

Broadneck took advantage of Arundel’s inability to move the ball and mixed run and pass to march up the field and score with Carcamo slamming up the gut from the 1-yard line to make it 31-9.
