Privett proves his worth for McDonogh

McDonogh midfielder Andrew Privett has a way of making all things good for the No. 2 Eagles boys soccer team.

More proof came Friday night against visiting Mount Saint Joseph.

After the home team played a sluggish first half, the junior scored on a free kick from 25 yards in the opening minutes of the second half. He finished a second free kick with 13:10 left to send McDonogh to a 2-0 win over the No. 5 Gaels in Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference play.

McDonogh (8-1) takes over second place in the MIAAAwith a 6-1mark – rebounding from Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at first-place and No. 1 Archbishop Curley. Mount Saint Joseph (7-3) had its five-game winning steak end and is now 6-2 in league play.

Privett said he doesn’t spend any extra time on set pieces during practice, but you would never know with his accuracy come game time. All five of his goals have been on free kicks this season.

NO. 1 ARCHBISHOP CURLEY 5, GILMAN 0: Ben Stitz had a hat trick and Tommy Sidleck made three assists as the visiting Friars (10-0, 7-0 MIAA A Conference) shut out the Greyhounds (2-6, 1-5). The win marked the fifth shutout in the past six games.

NO. 14 LOYOLA BLAKEFIELD 8, ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 0: Alex Reid and Jason Kolbe each scored twice to lead the host Dons (5-4-1, 3-4 MIAA A Conference) past the Cavaliers (2-7, 0-5). Loyola led 3-0 in the first half.

FRIENDS 1, SAINTS PETER & PAUL 0: The Quakers (6-0, 6-0-1 MIAA B Conference) took advantage of an own goal midway through the first half to extend their unbeaten streak and stay atop the B Conference.

A throw-in by Owen McManus was accidently headed in by a Sabres defender.
