Terps men receive votes in AP men’s basketball poll

The Maryland men’s basketball team will start the year where it finished last season: out of the Associated Press Top 25. TheTerps received seven votes in the preseason poll, released Wednesday, tied for 36th overall with Oklahoma and Nevada. Maryland received votes in all but the final AP poll last season, cracking the Top 25 for eight weeks and rising as high as No. 17. Duke is the preseason No. 1, followed by Big Ten preseason favorite Michigan State and Arizona. Minnesota is ranked No. 15, Northweste­rn No. 19 and Purdue No. 20. Wisconsin received 14 votes in the poll, ahead of the Terps, and Michigan got six. SQUASH: U.S. Squash will hand out three awards tonight at Meadow Mill Athletic Club. Recipients include: Peter Heffernan, Local Outstandin­g Achievemen­t; T. JamesHense­Jr., Stuart W. Brauns Award; and Nancy Cushman, Presidents Cup. COLLEGE FIELD HOCKEY: Four members of No. 7 Maryland (13-5, 6-2 Big Ten) earned All-Big Ten honors. Senior Lein Holsboer and junior Linnea Gonzales were named to the first team. Senior Carrie Hanks earned second-team honors. Bodil Keus was named Freshman of the Year. WOMEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: Alyssa Johnston (Southern) scored the game-winner for the fourthseed­ed McDaniel (12-5-1) in the Centennial Confernce tournament, advancing the Green Terror to Saturday’s semifinals against Johns Hopkins. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Junior Robinson hit a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Mount St. Mary's past Delaware, 84-82, in a charity exhibition game at Knott Arena. —
