Freshmen ignite Loyola men; Navy turns up defense in victory

Freshmen Isaiah Hart and Brent Holcombe scored 17 points each and host Loyola Maryland defeated American, 7269, on Wednesday night.

American (5-19, 2-11 Patriot) trailed by nine with two minutes left but used an 8-0 surge, including 3-pointers from Stacy Beckton and Cheikh Diallo, to get within 70-69.

However, Cam Gregory’s bucket for the Greyhounds (8-16, 6-7) with 23 seconds left provided the final points.

Loyola never trailed and took the lead for good five minutes into the game and had a12-point advantage with 8:51remainin­g.

NAVY 69, HOLY CROSS 34: Cam Davis and George Kiernan combined to score 32 points and the visiting Mids (16-10, 7-6 Patriot League) held the Crusaders (8-16, 5-8) to the second fewest point total allowed in program history.

Jehyve Floyd led Holy Cross with nine points.

Women

NAVY 62, HOLY CROSS 54: Bianca Roach scored 15 points to lead the host Mids (18-4, 8-3 Patriot League) past the Crusaders (10-12, 5-6).

Other double digit scorers for Navy were: Taylor Dunham (13), Hannah Fenske (12) and Laurel Jaunich (10). The Mids led 23-20 in the first half.

AMERICAN 69, LOYOLA MARYLAND 56: The host Eagles (19-4, 12-0 Patriot League) opened with a 15-9 run and beat the Greyhounds (7-16, 5-7). The win marked the 13th straight for American.
