No. 1 Terps women cruise past William & Mary in season opener

Senior attacker Megan Whittle ( McDonogh) and junior attacker Caroline Steele (Severn) scored four goals each as the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team defeated William & Mary, 18-7, on Sunday afternoon in the season opener for both teams. The Terps scored nine goals in the first 8:12 and led15-2 at halftime. Steele and junior midfielder Jen Giles (Mount Hebron) each had a hat trick at the break. Giles finished the game with three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Meghan Siverson was the fourth Terp to score multiple goals, scoring once in both halves. Senior attacker Taylor Hensh (Marriotts Ridge), sophomore attacker Brindi Griffin (McDonogh), sophomore attacker-midfielder Kali Hartshorn and sophomore midfielder Nikki Sliwak each scored once. In her college debut, freshman midfielder Grace Griffin ( Liberty) also scored. Junior goalie Megan Taylor (Glenelg) started in net, but the Terps played three goalies in the win. Freshman goalie Madison Hine ( Dulaney) led the team with three saves in nearly 12 minutes. Maryland did not allow a goal until the 12:40 mark. Sophomore midfielder Lizzie Colson (Manchester Valley) and Griffin led the Terps with two caused turnovers each. Junior attacker Maddie Torgerson led the Tribe with two goals. Maryland plays at No. 5 Florida on Saturday at noon. NATION WOMEN: Madi Hall and Lindsey Ronbeck each scored three goals to lead Florida to a 16-9 victory over No. 16 Colorado (0-1). Freshman attackers Kassidy Bresnahan and Grace Haus scored four the host Gators’ first five goals.
