Hopkins men jump into top 10 in Inside Lacrosse poll

After the Johns Hopkins men’s lacrosse team’s 14-6 victory over Towson on Saturday night, the Blue Jays moved from No. 13 to No. 8 in the Inside Lacrosse Division I Top 20 poll. Hopkins (1-0) was one of three teams to jump into the top 10. Syracuse (1-0) climbed from No. 11 to No. 7 after a 21-4 rout of Binghamton on Saturday. Virginia vaulted from No. 15 to No. 10 after outlasting then-No. 10 Loyola Maryland, 13-12, in double overtime on Saturday. Loyola fell two spots to No. 12. Maryland remained at No. 2, while Towson dropped five spots to No. 19. In the women’s Division I Top 20 poll, Maryland stayed at No. 1, Navy held at No. 10 and Towson rose from No. 20 to No. 11 after beating then-No. 4 Penn State, 14-13, on Saturday. Hopkins and Loyola each received votes.

Former All-Star RHP Esteban Loaiza was arrested on suspicion of traffickin­g drugs after packages containing a white powder believed to be cocaine were found at a home he rented in Southern California. Loaiza, 46, was booked Friday on charges involving the possession, transport and sale of 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of suspected cocaine worth an estimated $500,000, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. He was 126-114 with a 4.65 ERA over his 14-year career. ... Venezuelan authoritie­s said police have rescued the mother of Pirates CElias Diaz three days after she was kidnapped. Zulia state Gov. Omar Prieto announced Sunday evening on his Twitter account that Ana Isabel Soto, 72, was rescued earlier in the day by security officers. ... The Indians agreed to a minorleagu­e contract with C Ryan Hanigan. ... Rays RHP Jake Odorizzi is going to salary arbitratio­n with the sides $250,000 apart. Odorizzi, 27, was 10-8 with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts last year. ... Roy Halladay’s No. 32 will be retired by the Blue Jays before their opener March 29 against the Yankees. Halladay died at age 40 on Nov. 7 when the plane he was piloting crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. ... Former NL Rookie of the Year Wally Moon, who played on three World Series-winning teams with the Dodgers, has died. He was 87.

The 150th British Open will be held at St. Andrews in 2021. It will be the 30th time the world’s oldest major is played on the Old Course at the home of golf.

The Cardinals extended the contract of GM Steve Keim through 2022. Keim is a 19-year employee of the Cardinals who worked his way to become general manager in January 2013. The Cardinals won 49 regular-season games over the last five seasons. They also signed CB Lou Young to a one-year contract. ... Colts owner Jim Irsay is donating $25,000 to establish the Edwin Jackson Memorial Scholarshi­p in memory of the former linebacker who was killed in a traffic accident Feb. 4. ... Former Browns WR Mohamed Massaquoi revealed he lost most of his left hand in an all-terrain vehicle crash. Katie Lou Samuelson scored 26 points and top-ranked UConn used an early run to beat No. 4 Louisville, 69-58. The Huskies (25-0) won their 76th consecutiv­e home game and ended Louisville’s 13-game road winning streak.

The U.S. will host Paraguay in an exhibition on March 27 in Cary, N.C. The U.S. Soccer Federation also confirmed games against Ireland in Dublin on June 2 and versus France at Lyon on June 9.
