Charles H. Sadtler, investment broker

Charles Herbert “Bert” Sadtler, a retired investment broker and former high school and college lacrosse player, died of pneumonia Feb. 19 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. The former Ruxton resident was 90.

Born in Baltimore and raised on Berwick Road in Ruxton, he was the son of Herbert Sadtler and his wife, Cynthia Cochran.

He attended the Blue Bird School of Ruxton and was a 1945 graduate of St. Paul’s School for Boys, where he played lacrosse, football and basketball.

He joined the Army and, after training at Camp Blanding in Florida, he was assigned to Germany to guard prisoners. He left the military in 1947.

He obtained a bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia, where he played lacrosse as an attackman. He was a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and was later active in alumni affairs.

He became a broker for Mead Miller, an investment firm located on North Charles Street. In 1966 he joined Alex. Brown & Sons, where he worked until 2001. He then worked at Wells Fargo and retired in 2009.

He was a member of the L’Hirondelle and the Johns Hopkins clubs.

He was married for 54 years to Peggy Lee Sadtler, the former head of public relations for Union Memorial Hospital and the Baltimore Museum of Art. She died in 2009.

A memorial service for Mr. Sadtler will be held at 11 a.m. March 3 at St. Paul’s School Chapel in Brooklandville.

Survivors include a son, Bert Sadtler of Lutherville; a daughter, Rebecca S. Williams of Ruxton; and four grandsons.
