Corriero steps down as Meade hoops coach

-

Pete Corriero stepped down as Meade’s boys basketbal coach earlier this week. He leaves the program after leading it to the first state championship in school history and the most wins in a six-year stretch since the Mustangs began in 1977. “I felt it was the best time,” Corriero said. “This wasn’t a spur of the moment decision. I started coaching when I was 21 and now I’m 35. I started to ask myself if I wanted to be doing this from 35 to 50.” There was no known strife with players or administration or no public calls for Corriero’s head. Simply put, he wants more of his free time to himself. “I started to ask myself if I wanted to be taking the 40-minute bus rides, spending the holidays at a gym at 8 in the morning and only being off on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day,” said Corriero, also the school’s assistant athletic director and a physical education teacher. “I really need a break from coaching. The bus rides stopped being fun and the long practices over the holidays stopped being fun.” Corriero leaves after nine years where he compiled a 148-75 (.664) overall record and a 95-49 (.660) record against county teams. Corriero madeit clear heisn’t going anywhere. He is in the process of buying a home in Crofton. He left open the possibility of returning to the sidelines in the future. “It really would have to be an intriguing job and would have to and would have to be something different than what I’ve done the last nine years,” he said.
