N.C. Central eliminates Morgan men

Raasean Davis had 22 points and 11 rebounds and No. 6 seed North Carolina Central beat No. 7 seed Morgan State, 79-70, in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday night.

Pablo Rivas added 16 points for the Eagles (18-15), who advanced to the championship where they will face No. 1 seed Hampton on Saturday.

The Eagles took control late with a 7-0 run that made it 67-55 with five minutes left and closed it out from there, leading by at least eight the rest of the way.

North Carolina Central never trailed after Morgan State scored the opening point of the game. There were five ties, the last at 20-all.

Tiwian Kendley had 30 points to lead the Bears. David Syfax and Martez Cameron added 11 points each.

Davis was 10 of 13 from the field and the Eagles made 31 of 52 (59.6 percent).

Women

HARFORD CC 75, ASA 65: The Owls (27-2) beat the Avengers (21-1) at St. Joseph’s College to earn their third consecutive trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National tournament in Lubbock, Texas. Tournament play runs March 19 through the 24. Harford went on a 23-3 run early in the game to take a 27-10 lead, but ASA came back on a 25-4 run to take the lead at 35-31.

Down 35-34 at the half, Harford used a 19-8 run in the third quarter to take the lead. Tianna Swearinger finished with 15 points for the Owls. The Avengers made one last comeback attempt, but Harford held on.

Towson University commit Ryan Holder scored 20 points with eight rebounds, four assists and a couple of blocks. Another Towson commit Shawnkia McCallum had seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Destinee McQueen added 11 points and seven rebounds while Joy Morton scored 10.

Harford’s Mike Seney has coached four straight conference and regional championship teams and has a 67-0 against Maryland Juco Conference opponents and a 104-11 overall record in his career.
