Steele, Hensh lift No. 5 Maryland women over No. 8 Syracuse, 18-11

Led by junior attacker Caroline Steele and senior attacker Taylor Hensh, the No. 5 Maryland women’s lacrosse team defeated host No. 8 Syracuse, 18-11, on Sunday. Steele (Severn) had a career-best seven points with five goals and two assists, while Hensh (Marriotts Ridge) tied a career-high with four goals. The Maryland defense held the nation’s leading scoring offense to a season-low 11 goals on just 19 shots on goal. The Terps won 22 of 30 draw controls, led by 13 from the duo of sophomore attacker Kali Hartshorn and junior midfielder Meghan Siverson. Maryland drew 34 fouls that set up nine freepositi­on chances. Senior attacker Megan Whittle (McDonogh) scored two of her three goals on free position, while Hensh, Steele and Hartshorn added one apiece. The Terps, who led 8-4 at halftime, scored eight of the first 10 goals in the second half. Junior goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Glenelg) had eight saves and freshman Grace Griffin (Liberty) led Maryland with three ground balls and two caused turnovers. The Terps will begin Big Ten play at Johns Hopkins on Saturday at noon. NATION WOMEN: Darby Kiernan scored six goals and Miranda Stinson added four to lift No. 15 Colorado (5-2, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference) to a 15-5 win over visiting California (4-4, 0-2). ... Emma Harden and Paige Petty each scored two goals and host Virginia Tech (6-3, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) held off No. 17 Notre Dame (5-3, 1-2) in the second half for a 9-6 victory. Andie Aldave (McDonogh) had a hat trick for the Fighting Irish, who trailed 6-1 at halftime. ... Ali Baiocco scored five goals to carry No. 19 Stanford (4-3, 1-1 Pac-12) to a 19-8 win over host Oregon (3-2, 1-1). ... Maria Auth ( North Harford) tied her career-high with four goals to help lead No. 20 Penn State (4-3) to a 17-7 win over host Albany (0-6).
