Trainer Gonzalez has 4-win day; Karamanos victorious in comeback

Laurel Park winter-spring meet-leading trainer Claudio Gonzalez sent out four winners from five starters Sunday. Gonzalez, Maryland’s leading trainer in 2017, captured back-to-back races with Pachi Cruze ($9.80) in the second and Hashtag Selfie ($2.80) in the third. He followed up with wins in the fifth with Young American ($4.40) and Mischief Maas ($3.80) in the sixth, also running second with Candycoate­d Dame. In the fourth race, Gonzalez finished second with Miss Nosy, favored winner of the Maryland Million Distaff last fall. Gonzalez leads the winter-spring meet with 24 wins, 10 more than runner-up Kieron Magee. MORE: Sue Mancilla’s Sebray ($18.40) captured Sunday’s seventh race, a $19,000 claiming event for 4-year-olds and up, to give journeyman Horacio Karamanos his first win since returning from injury over the weekend. Karamanos, a perennial leading rider in Maryland who earned his 2,000th career victory last summer at Laurel, suffered a minor fracture of his T-5 vertebra when thrown from his mount, Marie From Parie, Jan. 14 at Laurel. He began getting on horses again last week for trainer Mary Eppler at Palm Meadows, Gulfstream Park’s satellite training facility in Palm Beach County, Fla., returning to the irons Friday at Laurel. ... Jockey Jomar Torres visited the winner’s circle twice Sunday with Pachi Cruze ($9.80) in the second race and Young American ($4.40) in the fifth. Torres is third in the rider standings with 21 wins, four behind runner-up, apprentice Wes Hamilton, who was first with Punch Nephew ($4) in the ninth after picking up four winners Saturday. Meet-leading rider Jorge Vargas Jr. took off his remaining three mounts with back spasms. ... Racing returns Friday with a jackpot carryover of $109,253.01 in the 20cent Rainbow 6, which covers Races 4-9. There will also be a carryover of $2,243.49 in the $1 Super Hi-5. Racing will start at 1:10 p.m. The Scarlet Knights scored the game’s final seven goals to earn just their ninth victory over their former Big East Conference rival in 49 meetings. ... Justin Guterding scored five goals and added an assist to lead No. 3 Duke (8-1) to a 9-3 victory against host Cleveland State (2-7). COLLEGE BASEBALL: Junior right-hander Hunter Parsons allowed one earned run and struck out three over seven innnings, but visiting Maryland (9-10) fell, 4-0, to No. 18 East Carolina (16-4) as the Pirates completed a three-game sweep. It was the third consecutiv­e start in which Parsons, a Fruitland native, pitched at least seven innings. Junior second baseman Nick Dunn went 2-for-4 for the Terps, who finished with six hits. ... United rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the Houston Dynamo, 2-2, on Saturday at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. Darren Mattocks scored in his second straight game to pull United (0-1-2) within 2-1 in the 49th minute. D.C. United’s new Audi Field wasn’t ready for the home opener, so an announced sellout crowd of 4,000 attended the alternate venue. Last week, D.C. United faced Atlanta United in front of an MLS regular-season record crowd of 72,035 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. COLLEGE FENCING: Johns Hopkins sophomore epeeist Tiger Gao earned a berth to the NCAA championsh­ips. Of the 72 men’s fencers selected for the championsh­ip, Gao is one of just six from a Division III school. MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY: Stevenson senior Doug Rose signed a profession­al contract with the Macon Mayhem of the Southern Profession­al Hockey League. —

The final World Cup races of the season were called off due to strong winds in Are, Sweden. Marcel Hirscher of Austria had already clinched the men’s overall and slalom season titles two weeks ago, while Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany clinched her third season title in the giant slalom after its cancellati­on. Mikaela Shiffrin had clinched the women’s overall season title on March 9.

Pedro scored on a header in extra time to lift Chelsea into the semifinals of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over host Leicester. Chelsea will face Southampto­n, which advanced with a 2-0 road victory over third-tier Wigan. The other semifinal will pit Manchester United against Tottenham. Both matches will be played over the weekend of April 21-22 at Wembley Stadium in London. ... Lionel Messi scored for the sixth consecutiv­e match to help give Barcelona a 2-0 victory over visiting Athletic Bilbao. With the win and second-place Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 loss at Villareal, Barca opened up an 11-point lead in the La Liga standings. In other action, Ronaldo scored four goals to move Real Madrid into third with a 6-3 victory over visiting Girona.

Juan Martin del Potro fended off three match points to beat top-ranked Roger Federer 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2) in the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif. Del Potro became the first Argentine winner in the 42-year history of the event. It was Federer’s first loss in 18 matches this year. In a matchup of 20-year-olds, Naomi Osaka beat Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-2 in the women’s final. It was Osaka’s first WTA title.
