Devlin wins second straight All-England badminton title
MARCH 21, 1998: Decked out in orange and black, a long shot named Jove Stone, belonging to Orioles owner Peter Angelos, wins the Endless Surprise Stakes at Laurel Park.
MARCH 20, 1988: “We might have lost as far as the score, but ...we won a lot of respect,” Maryland men’s basketball coach Bob Wade says as the Terps fall, 90-81, to No. 6 Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA tournament in Cincinnati. Brian Williams, a freshman center, scores 20 points for the Terps, who finish 18-13.
MARCH 22, 1978: In the ninth race at Pimlico Race Course, five jockeys and their mounts all tumble at the top of the stretch. One horse is destroyed and three riders, including Bill Passmore and Ronnie Franklin, are hospitalized with back injuries.
MARCH 23, 1971: Morgan State withstands a blinding snowstorm to defeat Amherst, 11-4, in men’s lacrosse at Hughes Stadium. Wayne Jackson (Edmondson) scores four times for the Bears.
MARCH 23, 1963: In its season opener, the Calvert Hall lacrosse team scores a 14-2 victory over Towson, the 1962 undefeated Baltimore County champion. The Cardinals score on their first three shots and get five goals from Wayne Mulligan, who’ll go on to play center for seven years in the NFL.
MARCH 22, 1958: Judy Devlin of Baltimore wins her second consecutive All-England badminton title, 11-7, 12-10, over Margaret Varner. In a 21-year career, Devlin — a Badminton Hall of Famer — will win 86 national and international championships.
MARCH 20, 1940: The first-place Orioles, Baltimore’s ice hockey team, set a single-game Eastern League scoring mark in a 14-3 rout of the River Vale (N.J.) Skeeters at Iceland. Jack Riley scores five goals; he’ll later be the first general manager of the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins.
MARCH 20, 1937: Charlie “King Kong” Keller, Maryland’s hard-hitting outfielder, stuns the Terps by leaving college in his senior year to sign with the New York Yankees. Keller, of Middletown, will play 13 years in the majors and make the All-Star team five times.

MARCH 20, 1871: Joe “Iron Man” McGinnity, a Hall of Fame right-hander who went 26-20 and pitched 39 complete games for the American League Orioles in 1901. He died in 1929.
