Brigade add four more players before camp

The Brigade announced a flurry of signings as they prepare to open training camp this weekend. Baltimore signed former Terps Andre Monroe (defensive lineman) and Daniel Adams (wide receiver) as well as defensive back Virgil Gray and wide receiver Kendrick Ings. Monroe, who last played for the Terps in 2014, holds the school record for career sacks (25) and led the team in the category all three seasons he played. The Upper Marlboro resident ranks third in school history with 38.5 career tackles for loss. Adams appeared in two games for the Terps in 2014, catching two passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Gray’s six-year AFL playing career includes more than 300 solo tackles, 47 intercepti­ons and seven defensive touchdowns. Gray spent last season on the Brigade coaching staff, coordinati­ng defensive backs and special teams. In 2017, Ings ranked second in the AFL in receptions (98), third in receiving yards (1,141) and fourth in receiving touchdowns per game (4.6) with the Tampa Bay Storm. Ings reunites with quarterbac­k Randy Hippeard, who signed with the Brigade earlier this week. The Brigade will open training camp Sunday at Coppermine Fieldhouse. The camp will close April 6 with an intrasquad scrimmage.The Brigade starts the season April 13 at 7 p.m. when they host the Washington Valor at Royal Farms Arena. Frese earned All-Region honors from the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associatio­n. Charles is one of 52 All-Region nominees for the 2018 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team. Frese was named United States Marine Corps/ WBCA NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career and fourth year straight. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Larry Bock, who won more matches than any other coach in NCAA volleyball history, has retired after seven seasons as coach at Navy and 41 years as a college coach. He holds NCAA records for the most career wins as a women’s coach (1,348) and as a college volleyball coach (1,448). He finished with a 96-103 record in seven seasons at Navy. Before joining the Mids, he spent 34 years at Juniata, going 1,252-192. WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Megan Whittle ( McDonogh) had four goals and an assist to lead No. 4 Maryland (7-1) to a 13-7 victory over No. 7 Penn (7-1). The visiting Terps led 8-4 at halftime. ... Katie O’Donnell scored the game-winner 27 seconds into overtime as No. 20 Penn State (7-4, 2-0 Big Ten) won 13-12 over visiting Johns Hopkins (7-4, 0-2). Maggie Schneidere­ith (Towson) tied the game (12-12) for Hopkins with 4:56 left in regulation and forced overtime. Schneidere­ith finished with four goals and had a natural hat trick during the second half. Coach Missy Doherty got her 100th win at Penn State.
