Maryland’s Confroy entered in 3-point shooting contest
Maryland senior Kristen Confroy will compete in the State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships on Thursday. The 30th annual event, which will show case the dunking and long-range shooting talents of 24 of the country’s premier college basketball players, will air live on ESPN2 at 9 p.m. Thursday from Greehey Arena at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. Fans can also watch through WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app. Confroy led the Big Ten and was No. 8 in the NCAA in 3-point field-goal percentage (.450). She averaged 9.5 points with 5.1 rebounds per game as she helped the Terps to a 26-8 record. PARALYMPICS: Noah Grove, 18, of Frederick, who had his left leg amputated below the knee when he was 5 years old, won a gold medal this month as part of the U.S. men’s sled hockey team at the Winter Games in Gangneung, South Korea. Grove is the son of Chris Grove, who won more than 680 races as a horse trainer based in Maryland. Grove, a forward, played in all five games, totaling three goals and three assists. PRO HOCKEY: The Capitals recalled goaltender Pheonix Copley from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Copley, 26, has a 14-16-6 record with two shutouts, a 2.86 goals-against average and a .898 save percentage in 38 games with Hershey. ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Baltimore Brigade coach Omarr Smith named Walt Housman, Cedric Walker, James Roe and Scott Bailey his assistant coaches. Mel Rosen, a former Auburn and Olympic track and field coach, has died. He was 90. A university spokesman said Rosen died Sunday.
