Top-ranked Spalding upset by Broadneck, 10-9, in baseball

Host Broadneck scored eight runs in the second inning and held on to upset No. 1 Archbishop Spalding, 10-9, in baseball Tuesday.

The Bruins (2-1) took a five-run lead, 8-3, into the third inning. After both teams scored two runs in the third inning, Spalding scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings in the failed rally.

Broadneck scored runs in the second inning on doubles by Thomas Coble and Ryan Smolen, and fielder’s choice by Ethan Soto and Dylan Tenney and a walk by Matt Isaac.

Starter Nicholas Gatton worked two innings, gave up two hits and three runs and struck out two in the win for the Bruins. Ryan Stolarczyk, Smolen and Mitch Bereznay were the relievers for Broadneck. Stolarczyk got the last nine outs and earned a save.

Nicholas Zehring took the loss for the Cavaliers (4-1).

NO. 4 CALVERT HALL 12, NO. 5 GILMAN 2: Winning pitcher Colin Flynn threw two innings of relief and JP Murphy went 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead the host Cardinals (2-2, 2-2 Maryland Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n A Conference) past the Greyhounds (3-5, 1-2). Calvert Hall scored six runs in the fourth inning.

NO. 10 MOUNT DE SALES 18, CATHOLIC 8: Julie Rowe (3-for-4) had two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Sailors (1-0, 1-0 IAAM A Conference) past the Cubs (1-1, 0-1).

Girls lacrosse

BROADNECK 15, EASTON 9: Kaala Puglisi had three goals and five assists to lead the host Bruins (2-0) past the Warriors (0-1). Sammy Dupcak and Alexis Sullivan each had four goals and Olivia Abe had three goals and two assists for Broadneck.

MOUNT HEBRON 17, ATHOLTON 3: Erin Demek and Ellie Miller scored four goals apiece as the Vikings rolled to their second straight blowout to open the season.

CATONSVILL­E 11, TOWSON 9: Trailing 5-4 with under 10 seconds left in the first half, the Comets (1-1) scored three goals in 59 seconds to take a two-goal advantage on the visiting Generals (1-1), who never pulled even.

Sophomores Kolby Weedon and Sophi Wrisk, who finished with four goals each, will continue their lacrosse careers in three years at the University of Maryland.

SOUTH RIVER 10, SOUTHERN 5: After the Bulldogs’ Alli VanSlyke tied the game at 5 at the 13:23 mark of the second half, the visiting Seahawks won the next six draws and scored five straight goals to open the season with the win and avenge a loss to Southern last year.

Madeline Cloyd led the Seahawks with four goals, including two during the late five-goal run. She scored on a free position to give South River a 7-5 lead, then capped the scoring with a goal at the 2:36 mark.
