DNC sends $85,000 to Maryland for 2018 races

-

The Democratic National Committee is sending money to Maryland to help the state party’s efforts to unseat Gov. Larry Hogan and his Republican colleagues in other offices this year. The $85,000 grant will help the Maryland Democratic Party reach out to voters, especially those who are young, African-American or in rural areas. State party chairwoman Kathleen Matthews said the grant will help the party build on its “unprecedented investment” last year that resulted in Democratic candidates’ ousting Republican mayors in Annapolis and Frederick. DNC Chairman Tom Perez, a former Montgomery County councilman and Maryland labor secretary, said in a statement that the money “will amplify organizing efforts across the state.” The Democrats have recognized seven candidates who are vying to take on Hogan in the fall. Hogan came into the race with advantages including strong approval ratings and more than $9 million in his campaign accounts at the start of the year. Queens. He said the academy missed an opportunity to teach leadership by mediating the situation and the slur was not used in a discriminatory manner. The incident is the only one in recent memory in which a midshipman was separated — the official term for being expelled — for using a racial slur, said Cmdr. David McKinney, an academy spokesman. “We have high standards for dignity and respect here at the Naval Academy and Midshipman Colter did not live up to those high standards,” McKinney said.
