Garry L. Rumbaugh, jewelry designer

Garry L. Rumbaugh, a jewelry designer, artist and antiques dealer, died March 21 at Carroll Hospice’s Dove House in Westminster from complications of a stroke. He was 80.

Born in Friendsville, Md., and raised in Hagerstown, Garry Lee Rumbaugh was the son of Henry “Jack” Rumbaugh, a Fairchild Aircraft Co. worker, and Kathryn Holsopple, a homemaker.

After the death of his father, Mr. Rumbaugh was raised by Sheldon “Cap” Holsopple, also a Fairchild worker, and his mother after they married.

He was a 1955 graduate of North High School in Hagerstown and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1959 from the Maryland Institute College of Art.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Rumbaugh designed and crafted women’s jewelry that was sold at The Ltd. in Cross Keys.

A former resident of the Fellowship Forest Neighborhood of Towson, he had been president of the Towson Loch Raven Community Council.

In 1987, he moved to Westminster, and worked in real estate sales with his wife, the former Patrica Scanner. He was also a builder.

When Deer Park United Methodist Church built a new church across the road, Mr. Rumbaugh rented the former building in the 1980s and converted it into the Smallwood Shoppe for Antiques.

Mr. Rumbaugh enjoyed history and had a “strong love for the past,” his wife said.

An accomplished woodworker, he enjoyed building furniture. As an artist, he painted landscapes and old buildings using acrylics, and was a photographer of nature and clouds.

He had been a cyclist and remained enthusiastic about physical fitness. For the past decade he was an active member of the Merritt Athletic Club.

“It kept him strong,” his wife said. She said he had set a record by doing “6,179 crunches in one hour on his 80th birthday, and worked up to over a million crunches per year for the last several years.”

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. April 15 at the Jeffrey N. Zumbrun Funeral Home, 6028 Sykesville Road, Eldersburg.

In addition to his wife of more than 60 years, Mr. Rumbaugh is survived by a son, Todd Rumbaugh of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a daughter, Tolly Peddicord of Eldersburg; a sister, Penny Hill of Hagerstown; and three grandsons.
