Gilman student admitted to all 8 Ivy League schools
Mekhi Johnson, a senior at the Gilman School, is one of a handful of students across the country to be admitted to all eight Ivy League schools this year, and the first one to do it from Gilman. “I didn’t have words then, and I don’t have words now,” he said after receiving the news the evening of March 28. “I just felt extraordinary.” Johnson also got into the University of Chicago, according to a news release from Gilman. Johnson, 17, has attended Gilman since first grade, and has a 98.1 average. He edits the school’s yearbook andliterary magazine, plays in the jazz band and drumline and works on musical theater productions. He also volunteers with a group that serves elementary school students from lowincome neighborhoods. A National Merit Scholarship Programcommendedstudent, Johnsonsings with the Gilman a capella choir and serves as Diversity Council president. Johnson hopes to study political science and eventually attend law school. He said he wants to use the unique experiences he’s had to combat systemic racism. “Going to law school seems like aneffective waytodothat,” hesaid. Johnson represents the fourth generation in his family to attend college. He has not yet chosen which of the elite schools he’ll attend. and 22, suffering from gunshot wounds.
