Old Dominion transfer plans to visit Maryland

-

Old Dominion redshirt junior forward Trey Porter said Wednesday that he plans on taking an unofficial visit Friday to Maryland, where he could be eligible to play basketball next season as a graduate transfer. Porter averaged career highs of 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds for the Monarchs in 2017-18, and finished the season strong, averaging 18 points and 7.5 rebounds over the team’s last four games. Playing a career-high 23.6 minutes a game, Porter also received attention during his breakout college season because he plays with an insulin patch. Porter was diagnosed with diabetes as an infant. A late-bloomer who played mostly soccer growing up in Fredericksburg, Va., and didn’t start playing Amateur Athletic Union basketball until high school, Porter played two years at ODU after transferring from George Mason. The Terps were among the first teams to contact the 6-11, 225pound Porter after he asked for his release. Porter graduated from ODU in December with a degree in communications. Porter said his decision won’t be affected by whether 6-10 center Bruno Fernando opts to forgo his remaining college eligibility after his freshman year.
