Westminste­r tops rival for first time since 2012

Owls trip Manchester Valley in girls lacrosse; Hereford rolls, 18-5, in boys lacrosse

No. 13 Westminste­r defeated host Manchester Valley, 16-10, in the Carroll County opener for both girls lacrosse teams, making it the team’s first victory over the Mavericks since 2012.

The contest brought two teams to the field that graduated a large number of players from the 2017 season. Both units worked to guide each other through their respective game plans and build chemistry along the way.

“I think we definitely improved from our first game,” Owls junior goalie Sara Tyssowski said. “Our defense has gotten a lot better and we’ve been communicat­ing a lot better and our shots are just beautiful this season.”

Owls junior midfielder Anna Ruby added that the girls “made things click” against the Mavericks. Ruby paced the team with five goals and an assist for the Owls 4-1, 1-0 county).

Westminste­r used a 4-0 run through the first nine minutes of play to gain a 4-1 lead over Man Valley — each goal was scored by a different player. The Mavericks trimmed the deficit 4-2 when sophomore midfielder Josey Shaffer picked up a loose ball, came around from behind the net and fed it to sophomore attacker Chloe Coppa for the goal.

Tayler Warehime netted her second tally with 11:42 remaining to bring the Mavs within three. The senior attacker led the team with six goals on the night. Ruby fired a shot past Mavs goalie Becca Wade from the free position with 4:47 left, but the Mavs scored the next three to close out the half, 8-5.

EDGEWOOD 19, HAMMOND 8: Ryan Parncutt scored four goals to lead the visiting Rams (4-0) past the Bears (1-1).

GERSTELL ACADEMY 13, NORTH HARFORD4: Brenna Duley scored twice, but the host Hawks (1-2) fell to the Falcons (1-4).

Boys lacrosse

NO. 10 HEREFORD18, EASTERN TECH 5: J.D. Nozemack had five goals and five assists to lead the host Bulls (3-2) past the Mavericks (2-1).

Baseball

NO. 5 ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 6, TROY (OHIO) 3: Peter Godrick, Matthew Palumbo, Josh Moylan, Justin Pelletreau and Justin Caesar each recorded RBIs as the visiting Cavaliers (6-2) bested the Trojans (2-2-3). .

NO. 11 PATTERSONM­ILL6, NORTHEAST 2: Winning pitcher Carson Uebersax went seven innings, gave up two runs, on three hits, walked two and struck out six as the Huskies (4-1) beat the host Indians (1-2). Max Elliott went 3-for3- with a double, three runs scored and an RBI for Patterson Mill.

NO. 14 CALVERT HALL 6, CARDINAL GIBBONS (FLA.) 2: Winning pitcher Brady Powell worked two innings of relief, gave up one run on four hits and struck out one as the visiting Cardinals (5-5) beat the host Chiefs (11-3) in Orlando, Fla. Calvert Hall scored four runs in the fifth inning. Garrett McIlhenney went 2-for-3 and had a stolen base for the Cardinals.

GLENELG COUNTRY 6, ANNAPOLIS AREA CHRISTIAN 3: Josh Murray went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Will Bickhart went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI, but the host Eagles (2-8, 0-2) were downed by the Dragons (3-0, 3-0 MIAA B Conference).

ST. JOHN’S-CATHOLIC PREP 10, SEVERN 0: Peter Rozner had the Admirals’ only hit as they fell to the visiting Vikings (4-1, 4-1 MIAA B Conference). Severn (3-4-1, 3-1) was undone by 10 walks and five errors.

FALLSTON 6, HAVRE DE GRACE 0: Winning pitcher Ryan Pickle threw seven innings, gave up two hits and struck out five as the Cougars (3-2) shut out the host Warriors (2-3). David Weber went 3-for-3 for Fallston.

Softball

NO. 2 EASTERN TECH 7, DULANEY 5: Savannah Bucolo went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI to lead the host Mavericks (2-1) past the Lions (0-2). Eastern Tech scored five runs in the second inning.

NO. 4 ARCHBISHOP SPALDING 10, MCDONOGH 9: Jordan Moore struck out five for the win and had two home runs and five RBIs to lead the Cavaliers (4-1, 2-0 Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n of Maryland A Conference) past the Eagles (2-3, 0-2).

NO. 12 JOHN CARROLL 11, CATHOLIC 5: Right-hander Kyleigh Waugh (2-1) went seven innings, gave up five runs on 11 hits, walked three and struck out five for the win. The Patriots improved to 2-1, 2-1 IAAM A Conference and the host Cubs fell to1-2, 0-2.

ST. PAUL’S 2, ST. JOHN’S CATHOLIC PREP 1: Rachel Colbus hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to lift the host Gators (2-0, 2-0 IAAM B Conference) over the Vikings (0-1, 0-1).

PATTERSON MILL 16, FALLSTON1: Winning pitcher Dakota Pitts went five innings, gave up one unearned run on three hits, walked one and struck out nine as the Huskies (3-0) beat the Cougars (1-4). Pitts also had three RBIs and scored twice.
