Two sisters, who play totally different positions for the Catonsville girls lacrosse team, combined to help the Comets to a 9-5 victory over visiting Mount de Sales on Monday.

Sophomore Kolby Weedon led the Comets with three goals and senior Amber Weedon finished with 12 saves.

“Amber played amazing today,” Catonsville goalie Cantey Bailey said. “She had some really good one-on-one saves that she came up with that were awesome.”

Weedon, who will play at Saint Joseph’s (Pa.) next year, was especially feisty with the Comets (7-2) clinging to a 2-1 lead after goals by Leah Marshall (two goals, two assists) and Kolby Weedon.

She stopped a breakaway opportunity by Mary Blee, and less than a minute later Maggie Marion scored to give the Comets a 3-1 lead.

The Comets got outstanding defensive efforts from goalie Weedon and defenders Savannah Beaver, Emma Meacham, Amber Stephens, Abbi Boehl and Izzy Cummings.

Beaver, who also plays in the midfield, hawked ground balls and helped with clears.

“She is that defender that you are 100 percent okay with her having the ball and can take it over and go to goal if she needs to,” Bailey said.

Meanwhile, the offense was methodically stretching the lead, while running through midfielders Weedon, Marshall, Marion and Sophi Wrisk.

Weedon and Wrisk will play at Maryland in three years and Marshall will play at Iona University next year.

“All four of them work well together and they are able to balance off of each other and they rotate — who is that aggressive middie to put the pressure on defensively and who is going to take it 1-v-1 — they do a very good job of working with each other,” Bailey said.

Catonsville, which won 10 of 16 draws with Marshall leading the charge, led 5-2 at halftime on goals by Marshall and Weedon.

Weedon’s score with 1:09 remaining in the half came after she dodged and weaved past two defenders.

With 16 seconds gone in the second half, Marshall assisted Weedon and just over a minute later Rory Black gave the Comets a 7-2 advantage.

Shortly after, Amber Weedon made two outstanding saves less than two minutes apart.

The first was a kick save after a shot by Sloane Skalstad and the second off Lindsay Kelly’s shot was stopped by her belly.

She added another save after a freeposition 8-meter shot by Rehkemper.

The Sailors (5-7) outshot the Comets 26-16 but only got five past Weedon.

“Me personally, I warmed up and did whatever I could to get pumped for this game and I had to go in with the right mindset,” Amber Weedon said. “I think I was seeing the ball very well and I’m an active goalie and I like to come out and intercept.”

After Wrisk made it 8-2 on a free-position goal, the Sailors finally broke their scoring drought on a goal by Lindsay Kelly, but they would get no closer than within four goals the rest of the way.

“I’m not taking anything away from them, they just took it to us and their goalie played a good game,” Mount de Sales coach Eric Pfeiler said.

But, the coach was disappointed in his squad that has seven losses and is 2-5 in Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference play.

“We constantly shoot ourselves in the foot every week by not executing, catching and throwing or making the right pass,” Pfeiler said.
