AROUND THE HORN

-

Rays: CF Kevin Kiermaier has a torn ligament in his right thumb that requires surgery and could sideline him two to three months. The Rays placed the defensive whiz on the 10-day disabled list Monday, a day after he was injured sliding headfirst into second base during a 10-4 loss to the Phillies. Kiermaier said he will have surgery Friday. This will be the third straight season the two-time Gold Glove winner will miss significant time because of injury. RHP Chih-Wei Hu was recalled from Triple-A Durham to fill Kiermaier’s roster spot.

Yankees: INF Brandon Drury says he has batted in big-league games with blurred vision caused by migraines. Drury has not played since April 6 and has been undergoing tests for the cause of the migraines. He resumed baseball activities before Monday’s homestand opener against the Marlins and said he has been put on an anti-inflammatory medication.

Pirates: 2B Josh Harrison is out six weeks with a broken bone in his left hand. The team said Harrison fractured his pinkie Sunday when he was hit by a pitch from the Marlins’ Jose Urena in the third inning of the Pirates’ 7-3 win.

Blue Jays: The series opener against the Royals was postponed because of chunks of ice crashing down from the nearby CN Tower following a weekend of freezing rain. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday. It’s the first cancellation at Rogers Centre since April 12, 2001.

Nationals: In a startling display of power, OF Bryce Harper broke his bat into two pieces, yet still hit a long home run against the Mets. Harper’s bat shattered just above his hands, and the barrel helicoptered into the netting behind home plate on the first base side. The ball sailed far over the wall in right-center at Citi Field. It was Harper’s major-league-leading eighth home run of the season, a solo shot in the first inning on a 95 mph fastball from Mets starter Jacob deGrom. Statcast estimated the length of the homer at 406 feet.
