Hello Hal wins 100th running of Hunt Cup
APRIL 27, 1996: Hello Hal, trained and ridden by Billy Meister, wins the 100th running of the Maryland Hunt Cup, a daunting 4-mile steeplechase race in Worthington Valley.
APRIL 23, 1971: In a battle of lacrosse archrivals, St. Paul’s defeats visiting Gilman, 11-4. The Crusaders get a spectacular goal from Don Zimmerman, who fights through five defenders to score. Zimmerman will later coach Johns Hopkins to three NCAA titles, and UMBC for 23 years.
APRIL 22, 1967: Damascus, a 3-year-old thoroughbred named for a town in Montgomery County and trained in Laurel, wins the Wood Memorial Stakes at Aqueduct. He’ll capture both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes en route to winning 1967 Horse of the Year honors.
APRIL 22, 1958: Orioles third baseman Brooks Robinson, 21, gets three hits (including a home run) and makes a nifty play to finish off the Senators, 4-2, in Washington. With runners on second and third base, Robinson knocks down a line drive, scrambles 3 feet to scoop it up and pegs a perfect throw to first base to end the game.
APRIL 27, 1954: Orioles vice president Bill DeWitt resigns to be assistant general manager of the New York Yankees. In TELEVISION HIGHLIGHTS MLB 1965, as owner of the Cincinnati Reds, DeWitt will OK the trade of outfielder Frank Robinson to Baltimore.
APRIL 24, 1942: Eastern’s softball team, the defending city public school champ, routs the Institute of Notre Dame, 47-5. Eastern bangs out 55 hits as both Eva Mae Leight and Marguerite Rutherford go 7-for-7 at the plate.
APRIL 25, 1935: Tennis star Bill Tilden, three-time Wimbledon champion and seven-time winner of the U.S. Open, loses to Chicago’s George Lott, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, in a barnstorming exhibition at Carlin’s Park.
APRIL 28, 1897: Orioles fans leave Union Park raving about right fielder Willie Keeler’s acrobatic catch of a sinking line drive in Baltimore’s 13-6 victory over the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. “Keeler ran up on it like a flash, stuck his hand under it just before it touched the ground, turned a somersault with the ball tightly squeezed in his hand and jumped up,” rifling a throw to first base to double up a runner, The Sun writes.
