Colts’ Billy Ray Smith leads 6-mile hike at Oregon Ridge

MAY1,1977: Orioles outfielder Pat Kelly, batting .087, hits two home runs — including a walk-off blast in the 10th inning — in a 3-2 victory over the California Angels at Memorial Stadium.

MAY 1, 1966: Led by Colts defensive tackle Billy Ray Smith, grand marshal of the outing, 500 people take part in the Maryland Physical Fitness Commission’s annual 6-mile hike through the woods at Oregon Ridge.

MAY 3, 1960: John Miller pitches a three-hitter as Edmondson’s baseball team defeats Carver, 6-3, at Druid Hill Park. Miller will play five years with the Orioles and earn a World Series ring in 1966.

MAY 5, 1952: Senator Joe, a horse named for Sen. Joseph McCarthy, a Republican from Wisconsin, wins the $10,000 Primary Day Handicap at Pimlico Race Course.

APRIL 30, 1946: Make it 52 consecutive victories for the St. Paul’s lacrosse team, a 13-5 winner over previously unbeaten Poly on the losers’ field. Ace Adams (four goals), Charley Compton (three) and Billy Hooper (two) lead coach Howdy Myers’ Crusaders.

MAY3,1927: New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth conducts the St. Mary’s Industrial School band in several musical numbers at a benefit concert at Catholic University in Washington. Ruth, who’ll hit 60 home runs this season, attended St. Mary’s as a boy.

APRIL 30, 1919: In the aftermath of World War I, Orioles owner Jack Dunn announces that all wounded servicemen — soldiers, sailors and Marines — will be admitted free to the team’s International League games this season at Oriole Park.

APRIL 29, 1886: Despite some stupid base-running, the Orioles defeat the Brooklyn Grays, 14-9, in an American Association game at Union Park. With runners on first and second base and none out, Jack Manning singles to right field. On the same play, all three runners get hung up between bases and are tagged out.
