John C. Porter Sr., property manager
John C. Porter Sr., retired owner of a property management company who enjoyed horseback riding, died Thursday from undetermined causes at his Parkton home. He was 68.
He had been in declining health in recent years, according to a brother, Andrew A. Porter of Columbia.
The son of Raughley L. Porter, a civil engineer, and Nona Porter, a homemaker, John Calvin Porter was born in Baltimore and raised in Homeland and Roland Park.
Mr. Porter was a 1969 graduate of Boys’ Latin School, where he had lettered in football and lacrosse, and attended Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pa. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Baltimore.
Mr. Porter began his career in property management when he went to work for Casey & Assoc. He subsequently worked for Casey-Carrie-Winston and Attman Properties before establishing his own commercial property management business, Porter Property Management.
He closed the business last year and retired.
His chosen profession “fit him perfectly, as he loved dealing with people,” his brother said. “He treated people with respect and often interjected humor in whatever he was saying.”
Mr. Porter had served as president of the local chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association.
He had a lifelong love of horses and polo, and even though his horseback riding days had come to an end, he still kept two horses as pets. Hewas a regular attendee of the Grand National Steeplechase and Maryland Hunt Cup races.
Mr. Porter had lived in Monkton for 30 years before moving to Parkton. He was an avid reader and book club member.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, York and Overbrook roads, Rodgers Forge.
In addition to his brother, Mr. Porter is survived by three sons, John C. Porter Jr. of Monkton, Patrick S. Porter of Baltimore and Trevor F. Porter of Bradford, Vt.; his mother, Nona Porter of Baltimore; three sisters, Patricia Kaiser of Baltimore, Malinda Donovan of Arnold and Andrea Myles-Hunkin of Cumberland, Maine; his longtime companion, Suzanne Barton of Parkton; and four grandchildren. Marriages to Bitsy Turner and Bonnie Prater ended in divorce.
