Alex Carr scored 49 seconds into overtime to lift the Winters Mill boys lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over South Carroll in a Class 2A West Section I quarterfinal Wednesday night.

“I called him over and I said, ‘That goal almost made up for you dropping four passes,’ ” coach Jeff Beeker said he told Carr. “And he looked at me and he said, ‘I know, Coach.’ ”

Carr could have left Winfield feeling like the goat. It was the sophomore’s first game back after being out two weeks because of a concussion, Beeker said. Carr struggled in the midfield throughout the game, and a few times Beeker called for a replacement so the Falcons (5-10) could find a rhythm.

But Carr stuck with it and finished with two goals, none bigger than the one he scored in overtime.

FALLSTON 18, ELKTON 4: Jack Maranto won 20 of 22 faceoffs and scored a goal as the Cougars won their Class 2A East Section I opener. Colton Presley scored seven goals for Fallston.

CATONSVILLE 11, PERRY HALL 4: Will Bredeck scored four goals to lead the Comets in a Class 4A North game.

SOUTHERN 19, THOMAS STONE 0: Defending 2A/1A state champions Southern opened its bid for a repeat by jumping on Thomas Stone early to set up a Friday date with No. 2-seed Calvert in the Section II semifinals of the South region. Colin Phipps scored five goals in the first half.
