The Dunbar boys and Poly girls sat in first place after a weather-shortened first day of competition at the Baltimore City track and field championship meet Thursday at Dunbar.

The meet will finish Saturday, also at Dunbar; lightning forced the first day to end early.

For the boys, Dunbar leads with 47 points, ahead of City (35), Digital Harbor (33) and Poly (32.5). The Poets did not win any events but came in with two second-places (long jump, high jump) plus four thirds (800 and 3,200 relays, shot put and high jump).

Almighty Wiliamson took second in the long jump and third in the high jump while Dunbar teammate Sammy Davis got second in that high jump.

Ablel Gebreselase of Digital Harbor won the 3,200 meters in 10:25.81. He also took the same event during indoor track and again last spring, helping the Rams remain one of the city’s top teams.

Digital Harbor also won the 3,200 relay (8:23.51), beating Poly by 12.52 seconds for 10 more points.

For the girls, Poly led after the first day with 28 points, followed closely by City (26) and Western (22).

Nia Warren of Western continued a strong freshman season by capturing the 3,200 in 13:05.98, scoring a victory of nearly 30 seconds.

City won the 3,200 relay (10:18.11) while Mervo (1:49.45) took the 800 relay in the other two events of the day as the girls only finished three. They were not able to complete any of their field events — long jump, triple jump, shot put — because of lightning.
