Lewis joins coaching staff of UMBC men’s basketball

Colby Lewis was named as the UMBC men’s basketball teams’ director of recruiting/program developmen­t on coach Ryan Odom’s staff. Lewis replaces Griff Aldrich, who was named Longwood’s head coach in late March. Lewis just completed his fourth season as a member of the Charlotte coaching staff and his third as the video coordinato­r. He served as the 49ers program's associate director of operations for the 2014-15 season. Lewis joined the coaching staff after spending the 2013-14 season as a graduate manager with the 49ers program. MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Brandon Warren (Calvert Hall) made10 saves and helped stave off a late rally as host Salisbury (19-3) won, 9-7, over Dickinson (17-4) in a NCAA Division III quarterfin­al. The Red Devils went on a 3-0 run over the final 5:35. ... Salisbury senior defenseman Kyle Tucker was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. ... Stevenson junior JT Thelen was named the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, and he and senior Harrison Faecher were selected to the ECAC first team. Sophomore Justin Burnette (Owings Mills) was named to the second team. WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Nick Williams (Towson University, Calvert Hall) was promoted to associate head coach at Georgetown. Williams has been an assistant coach with the Hoyas for five years. MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF: Making the program’s 12th NCAA championsh­ip appearance, Navy concluded play at the NCAA regional hosted by Oklahoma by placing 13th. ARENA FOOTBALL LEAGUE: The Washington Valor fired coach Dean Cokinos. Valor defensive coordinato­r and defensive line coach Benji McDowell has been named interim head coach. The Valor went 3-11 last season in Cokinos’ first year as coach and are 0-4 this season. Washington will host the Brigade on Saturday at 3 p.m. — Budenholze­r, 48, who parted ways with the Hawks last month, agreed in principle to a four-year contract. Financial terms of the deal weren’t available. ... The Cavaliers’ LeBron James, Rockets’ James Harden and Pelicans’ Anthony Davis are the finalists for MVP, the league announced. The winner will be named during a televised awards show June 25 in Los Angeles.

The Bills will retire Hall of Fame RB Thurman Thomas’ No. 34 jersey Oct. 29 when they host the Patriots. Thomas will become the third Bills player to have his number retired, joining QB Jim Kelly and DEBruce Smith. ... League owners will vote on a proposal next week at their meetings that will make all player ejections subject to replay review.

Antoine Griezmann scored twice to lead Atletico Madrid to a 3-0 win over Marseille in the Europa League in Lyon, France. Gabi added another goal in the 89th minute for Atletico, which claimed its third Europa title. ... Everton fired Sam Allardyce as manager after just seven months. Allardyce joined the club in late Novemeber when it was near the relegation zone in the English Premier League. It finished eighth. ... Former England internatio­nal and Huddersfie­ld left back Ray Wilson died after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83. Wilson made 63 appearance­s for England during the 1960s and was a starter on the 1968 World Cup championsh­ip team.

Fabio Fognini of Italy upset sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the third round of the Italian Open in Rome.
