Baltimore Sun

Put focus on NDPwin

- Maria Cummings Jackson, Cockeysville

As a proud alumna of Notre Dame Prep (Class of ‘ 87) and the mother of two graduates (Classes of ‘11 and ‘17), I find it very frustrating that The Baltimore Sun decided to put a front page color photo of three McDonogh lacrosse players crying after the championship game rather than a photo of the NDP players celebrating a hard-fought championship win (“Going streaking: McDonogh girls lacrosse among area’s greatest runs in sports,” May12).

I don’t understand why a fuzzy, black and white photo of the NDP players was on the inside. Give NDP some credit! I also imagine those McDonogh girls probably did not love that pic either. The article did, thank goodness, include quotes from a few NDP players, but for the most part the article was all about McDonogh’sstreak ending. Wehave been hearing about McDonogh’s winning streak in The Sun for years. It would have been nice to not read about it in this particular article since NDP won the game. I would have liked to hear more about NDP’s historic season, players, coaches, etc. This story should have been focused on Notre Dame Prep’s monumental win!

My son was on a MIAA championship lacrosse team five years ago (Loyola Blakefield ‘13), and The Sun did the same thing after his game. A photo of the disappointed Boys Latin goalie was on the front page instead of the celebrating Loyola Dons. Loyola had surprisingly upset Boys Latin and ended their perfect, undefeated season. Perhaps it is time for The Sun to focus on the accomplishments of the winning teams rather than focusing on the disappointment of undefeated teams who lose their last game of the season. It is a slight to the winners who won, despite the odds stacked against them.
