Huerter, Fernando do well at combine

-

Kevin Hueter and Bruno Fernando went to this week’s NBA scouting combine in Chicago trying to surprise the league’s coaches and front office personnel with some things they might not have shown consistently at Maryland. For Huerter, it was to prove he’s a better athlete than he appeared during his first two seasons as a Terp. For Fernando, it was to prove he had more of a perimeter game than he displayed as a freshman last season. So far, Huerter and Fernando have done just that. As a result, their stock continues to improve — Huerter’s in particular. Huerter, who came to College Park with the reputation as strictly a 3-point shooter, had the top shuttle run among the 40 players tested Thursday, was fourth in the three-quarter-court sprint, seventh in lane agility and finished 14th in maximum vertical leap with a more-than-respectable 38 inches elevation. The 6-foot-7, 194-pound sophomore was among the top shooters, finishing first in his spot-up right-side shooting (a perfect100 percent) and right corner NBA shooting (80 percent), as well as on-the-move15-foot shooting at 87.1 percent. He also tied for third in spot-up left-side shooting. Huerter sat out Friday’s workouts because of a hand injury. Perhaps one of the biggest surprises came from Fernando in terms of his perimeter shooting. The 6-10, 240-pound Angolan, who didn’t even attempt a 3-pointer until the second half of the season and tried only three (making one) the entire season, was first among centers by hitting 80 percent of his top-of-the-key shots and 70 percent of his on-the-move 15-footers, as well as finishing tied for second in NBA right-corner shooting at 60 percent. The combine ends Sunday. WOMEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE: Seven Maryland players were named Inside Lacrosse Media All-Americans. Senior attacker Megan Whittle and junior defender Julia Braig both earned firstteam honors, while junior midfielder Jen Giles, junior attacker Caroline Steele, and sophomore defender Lizzie Colson was placed on the second team. Sophomore attacker junior goaltender Megan Taylor and Kali Hartshorn were named honorable mention. ... Navy’s Jenna Collins (River Hill) was selected to the Inside Lacrosse first team, while Kelly Larkin was named to the second team. Team captains Julia Collins (River Hill) and Blake Smith (Notre Dame Prep) were each honorable mention. COLLEGE BASEBALL: Senior right-hander Taylor Bloom (Severna Park resident) tossed an eightinning complete game, but the Maryland baseball team fell, 5-1, to host Indiana on Friday afternoon at Bart Kaufman Field. The Terrapins (24-29, 9-13 Big Ten) trailed following an Indiana run in the first before tying the ballgame in the sixth. The Hoosiers then scored four unanswered runs to finish off the contest. ... Due to inclement weather in the Annapolis area, game one of the Patriot League Championship was postponed. The first game of the bestof-three series between top-seeded Navy and second-seeded Army was pushed back to today at noon. ... Towson senior left-hander David Marriggi struck out seven to move into second place on the all-time strikeout list in the Tigers’ 12-3 loss to James Madison. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Johns Hopkins hired Ricky Hernandez as an assistant coach for Josh Loeffler’s staff. Hernandez replaces Maurice Williams, whois nowanassistant coach at Division I Longwood. MEN’S COLLEGE SOCCER: D.C. United will host an NCAA Division I match between Maryland and Virginia on Sept. 3 at the new Audi Field in the first college game at the venue. COLLEGE SOFTBALL: Towson will be playing for a championship after rallying to defeat Eastern Kentucky, 4-3, in the National Invitational Softball Championship winners’ bracket game Friday afternoon. —
