Toliver, Delle Donne lead Mystics to win in opener

Kristi Toliver (Maryland) hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points and Elena Delle Donne scored 13 with seven assists to help the host Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever, 82-75, on Sunday in the WNBA season opener for both teams. Delle Donne hit Toliver for a 3 to make the score 82-73 with 1:08 remaining. The Fever trailed by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter, but Candice Dupree made a jumper and then a runner in the lane 26 seconds later to pull the Fever within six with 1:25 to play. Monique Curry and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 11 points apiece for Washington. Sweden capped its run through the world championsh­ip by edging Switzerlan­d 3-2 in the final after a penalty shootout to successful­ly defend its title in Copenhagen, Denmark. Filip Forsberg scored the decisive goal in the shootout. The United States topped Canada 4-1 to claim the bronze medal.

Sporting Lisbon lost the Portuguese Cup final in Lisbon days after its players were assaulted by disgruntle­d fans. Sporting lost 2-1 to Aves, which finished 13th in the 18-team Portuguese league and had never won the cup. The result capped a tense week after a group of fans forced its way into Sporting’s training center Tuesday and assaulted players and staff. Police detained 21 suspects. “It was a very complicate­d week,” Sporting coach Jorge Jesus said. “It was like a horror movie.”

Rafael Nadal came out on top in a matchup of this year’s top two clay-court players, beating defending champion Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to win a record-extending eighth Italian Open title in Rome. The victory means Nadal will reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Roger Federer on Monday.
