Salisbury’s Tucker named top DIII defensive player

The Salisbury men’s lacrosse team got a boost before Sunday’s NCAA Division III tournament final against Wesleyan at 1 p.m. at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., when Kyle Tucker was named the top DIII defensive player for the second year in a row by the United States Intercolle­giate Lacrosse Associatio­n. The senior defenseman received the William C. Stiles Memorial Award given to the outstandin­g defensive player and is the first player to earn that distinctio­n in back-to-back seasons since former Sea Gulls defenseman Eric Martin (200304). Senior defenseman and Sea Gulls teammate Will Nowesnick joined Tucker on the USILA AllAmerica­n first team for the second straight year. Salisbury placed two more players on the second team in junior midfielder Corey Gwin and senior short-stick defensive midfielder Troy Miller. Earning honorable-mention status were seven Stevenson players in junior attackman JT Thelen and sophomore attackman Ethan Christense­n, senior midfielder­s Harrison Faecher and Kyle Karsian, senior defenseman Austin Howard, sophomore faceoff specialist Justin Burnette (Owings Mills) and sophomore goalkeeper Sam Ross; a pair of Sea Gulls in senior midfielder Garrett Reynolds ( Archbishop Curley) and senior long-stick midfielder Cory Berry; and Frostburg State senior midfielder Adam Gross (South River). HORSE RACING: The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot carryover swelled to $261,279.44 for today’s 10-race program after going unsolved Friday at Pimlico Race Course. Today’s Rainbow 6 spans Races 5-10 and features three turf races. ... Journeyman Alex Cintron, a perennial leading rider in Maryland, earned the first win of his latest comeback guiding Establo G&G’s Maru’s Raven to a 1¼-length victory in Friday’s fourth race at Pimlico. For the 30-yearold Cintron, it was his first victory since Nov. 17, 2017 at Laurel Park, two days before he suffered serious injuries to his face and knee and a broken shoulder blade in a spill at Laurel Park. COLLEGE BASEBALL: Mount St. Mary’s fell, 3-1, to Wagner (37-17, 21-7) in a Northeast Conference tournament eliminatio­n game. Junior shortstop Patrick Causa led the Mountainee­rs (21-33, 15-15) offense, going 2-for-3 with a single, a home run, and an RBI. MEN’S COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD: Coppin State’s Aaron Lewis and Joseph Amoah qualified for today’s NCAA quarterfin­al in the 110-meter hurdles and 200 dash, respective­ly, with their performanc­es in the first round of the NCAA East Prelims. — Kevin Sutherland birdied his last two holes for a 5-under 66 and a share of the second-round lead with Scott McCarron in the Senior PGA Championsh­ip in Benton Harbor, Mich. ... Nasa Hataoka, 19, shot a 4-under 68 to lead by one stroke over Minjee Lee after the second round of the LPGA Volvik Championsh­ip in Ann Arbor, Mich. ... Bucks G Sterling Brown said he tried to remain calm when Milwaukee police used a stun gun to take him down during his arrest for a parking violation. In an interview aired on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Brown said police pinned him down and held his hands behind his back then used a taser on him outside a Walgreens on Jan. 26.

Civil rights activists protested outside league headquarte­rs, calling on team owners to overturn their new national anthem policy and urging a boycott of the league and its sponsors. ... The Packers signed TE Marcedes Lewis, adding another veteran to back up Jimmy Graham. The 6-foot-6 Lewis, who turned 34 last week, played 12 seasons with the Jaguars where he had 375 catches and 33 touchdowns.

Prosecutor­s in Washington state have dropped domestic violence charges against former U.S. national team star goalkeeper Hope Solo. She was charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault in 2014 after police said she assaulted two family members at a home in Kirkland, Wash.
