Memorial bike ride planned for Caprio on Sunday

-

A memorial bike ride to honor slain Baltimore County Police Officer Amy Caprio is planned for Sunday in Kingsville. Caprio’s husband, Tim, planned the event to honor his wife’s memory, according to a Facebook post for the event. Amy Caprio was killed after she confronted16-year-old Dawnta Harris, who was inside a stolen Jeep Wrangler in a Perry Hall neighborhood on May 21. Police said Caprio repeatedly told the teen to leave the Jeep before Harris struck Caprio with the vehicle and drove off. He and three other teens, Darrell Ward, 15; Derrick Matthews, 16; and Eugene Genius IV, 17 — all of East Baltimore — were all charged with first-degree murder in her death. Harris’ defense attorneys said the teen was frightened when Caprio drew her gun and was simply trying to drive away. Caprio, 29, was the first Baltimore County police officer killed in the line of duty since 2013. She was buried at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens last week. Sunday’s event is also being organized by the Friends of Jerusalem and the Gunpowder United Mountain Bike Operators, a group of volunteers who advocate for and help build and maintain trails, said the group’s president, Jerry Fonshell. Will Reiber, a spokesman for the department. The woman wasn’t physically injured, but she did give her assailants money and was intimidated and threatened, Reiber said. He did not say how many or which machines were used. It was a well-orchestrated incident, he said, and the kidnappers were very savvy, leading police to believe it wasn’t a one-time occurrence. “It was obviously some kind of organized operation to bilk people out of money,” Reiber said. “They are targeting elderly people who are already at a disadvantage.” One of the men was captured on video surveillance and police are asking anyone who knows his identity to call Sgt. Thaddeus Tomlinson with the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at 410272-2121.
