Bennie Rutherford Jr., financial analyst

Bennie H. Rutherford Jr., who worked in health care financial analysis and enjoyed church work and serving as a DJ, died at his Windsor Mill home Sunday at age 46. The cause has not been determined.

Mr. Rutherford was the son of Bennie H. Rutherford Sr., a retired warehouse manager, and Beverly J. Rutherford, a retired hospital administra­tor.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in East Flatbush. He attended Holy Family Catholic School and Philippa Schuyler Intermedia­te School 383, and graduated from Edward R. Murrow High School.

As a youth he was active in the Brooklyn Chapter of Jack and Jill of America — an organizati­on for African-Americans founded in the 1930s that focuses on social and cultural works for children. He had also been involved in youth ministries at both Bethany Baptist Church, where he served on the Junior Usher Board, and St. Paul Community Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

He came to Baltimore to attend Morgan State University, and graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and teaching. He subsequent­ly attended Towson University and in 2008 obtained a post-baccalaure­ate certificat­e in database management systems and a master’s degree in informatio­n technology.

Mr. Rutherford worked more than 20 years for RadNet Inc., a national provider of diagnostic imaging services, rising to the position of financial analyst.

He was active in the ministry of New Psalmist Baptist Church in Baltimore, completing its disciplesh­ip ministry training in 2012. He also worked with the church’s Young Adult Ministry and was a longtime member of its Young Adult Usher Board, where he had served as vice-president and was president at the time of his death.

In addition to his work and church activities, Mr. Rutherford enjoyed performing as a DJ, and often filled that role at friends’ events. He was extremely tech savvy, assisting friends and family with various computing and audio-visual issues.

A wake for Mr. Rutherford will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore, with a funeral service following at noon.

In addition to his parents and his brother, he is survived by a sister, Faith Rutherford; stepsister Kristina Taylor; and stepbrothe­r Kenly Dillard, all of New York; godson Malachi Rogers; goddaughte­r Moian Broadus; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.
