Three jockeys double up on Laurel opening day

-

Jockeys Feargal Lynch, Forest Boyce and Sheldon Russell each rode a pair of winners as Laurel Park opened its 40-day summer meet Friday. Lynch, coming off his second consecutive Preakness Meet at Pimlico title, carried that momentum to the summer stand riding Shotdowninflames ($4.80) to victory in the fourth race and Seeking the Sunset ($8) in the sixth. Boyce, whose two Maryland meet championships came during Laurel summer and fall in 2010, took Friday’s opener with Gfour ($9.40) and doubled up in the eighth on Blow the Whistle ($5.40). It was the third straight win, fifth from six races this year and 10th overall for the 6-year-old gelding, racing for just the second time at Laurel. A seven-time Maryland meet-leading jockey, most recently at Laurel’s 2015 winter stand, Russell finished first with Petticoatsnpistols ($4.20) in the third race and Hurricane Bear ($3.60) in the 10th-race finale. Laurel will serve up an 11-race program today starting at 1:10 p.m. Seven races are carded for its world-class turf course over the All Along and Dahlia layouts. There will be carryovers of $1,555.22 in the 20-cent Rainbow 6 (Races 6-11) and $4,179.61 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for today’s opener. NATIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE: Mallory Pugh, the rising U.S. women’s national team star in her second season with the Washington Spirit, will probably miss several weeks with a right knee injury suffered in a match Sunday in Houston. The Spirit and U.S. Soccer Federation announced Thursday that their respective medical staffs are evaluating the 20-year-old attacker, who will undergo additional testing “to determine the extent of the injury.” Based on initial reviews, Pugh is not likely to need surgery. However, an official diagnosis and prognosis has not yet been determined. ... The Spirit signed Schuyler DeBree as a National Team replacement player ahead of today’s home game against the Chicago Red Stars. Debree replaces Nigerian international forward Francisca Ordega while she competes for her country in a pair of World Cup Qualifiers against Gambia. —
