Former McDonogh girls soccer coach Maurice Boylan Jr. described it as a homecoming when he learned he was named the girls soccer coach at his alma mater this week.

Boylan, a 1969 Dulaney grad, turned the McDonogh program into a perennial power, posting a 316-84-34 mark in 18 seasons before stepping down after the 2008 season.

He led the Eagles to three Catholic League championships in the 1990s, and they reached the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference title game in his last two years as coach.

After spending three years at McDaniel as an assistant coach on the women’s soccer team, the 66-year-old had been coaching youth soccer.

“We’re super thrilled. He hasn’t lost a beat, and the fact he can come back home to Dulaney is a bonus for him and the community as well,” Dulaney athletic director Richard Reed. “We couldn’t be more excited.”

Boylan was equally excited to return to high school athletics at the place he went to school. He replaces Aaron Velkry, who spent three seasons as head coach and led the Lions to a 7-8 mark last year.

“I feel like I’m home again, and it’s a great feeling,” said Boylan, who helped create the Lutherville-Timonium youth soccer programs. “No. 1, I graduated from there, so that’s huge. I’m all about the community, being born and raised in Timonium.

“It’s exciting. I’ve always enjoyed the high school kids, and developing programs is my forte.” Overlea hires boys basketball coach: Veteran boys basketball coach Al Holley has returned to Baltimore County, as he was named the new coach at Overlea this week.

Holley made his mark at Milford Mill, going 125-29 in six seasons while guiding the Millers to two state titles and four Baltimore County championships before moving on to Friends in 2012.

He spent five seasons at the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference school, leading the Quakers to two playoff appearances.

“I did want to get back in Baltimore County to coach, and Overlea has a lot of potential, so it looks like a good match. They want to build the program, and that’s what I like to do, so I’m excited to get started,” Holley said.

Overlea finished 14-13 last season, falling to Pikesville, 54-53, in the Class 1A North Section I semifinal. Former McDonogh girls soccer coach Maurice Boylan Jr. went 316-84-34 record over 18 seasons with the Eagles. He’ll coach next season at Dulaney, his alma mater.
