Delle Donne, Mystics dealing with ailments

-

Washington Mystics star forward Elena Delle Donne, who hasn’t played in a game since she logged just 13 minutes in a victory over the Minnesota Lynx on May 27, is dealing with an illness that’s being closely monitored because of her history with chronic Lyme disease and is listed as questionable for today’s 4 p.m. home game against the defending WNBA champion Lynx (2-5). Natasha Cloud, who started her college career at Maryland, has missed three games because of kidney stones, which as of Tuesday she had still not passed. The team recently got LaToya Sanders back after the forward missed the first five games of the season with anemia. As if that’s not enough, starting guard Tierra Ruffin-Pratt sat out Tuesday’s practice with a sore jaw after she took a hard fall at Phoenix last week and got clocked in the face during Sunday’s loss to the Connecticut Sun. Point guard Tayler Hill is still recovering from an ACL tear from last summer. VARSITY BOYS SOCCER: Justin Gielen of DeMatha was named Gatorade Maryland Boys Soccer Player of the Year. The 6-foot, 180-pound senior forward had 23 goals and two assists this past season, leading the Stags (10-8-3) to the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament championship game. Gielen was the leading scorer for his club team, Baltimore Celtic, en route to the squad’s 2017 Under-17 U.S. Youth Soccer national championship. COLLEGE BASEBALL: CCBC Dundalk named former Towson University pitching coach and Loyola Blakefield assistant Jon Karsos (Towson High) head baseball coach. Karsos, who played and coached with the Lions, replaces Kyle Campbell, who resigned at the end of the 2018 season after three years. HORSE RACING: In addition to a live program of 12 races, fans at Laurel Park will be able to watch and wager on Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Justify’s quest for history in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Laurel will open its doors a half-hour early at 11 a.m. for Belmont Day. First race post time at Laurel will be 12:35 p.m. —
