Ollie’s Bargain Outlet wins bids for two state Toys R Us stores

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet has won bids to take over Toys R Us stores in Glen Burnie and Hagerstown.

Toys R Us announced plans in March to sell or close all 800 of its U.S. stores after 60 years in business. The toy retailer, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year, has been running going-out-of-business sales since the end of March and held an auction June 11 to sell some properties.

The chain operates nine Toys R Us stores and six Babies R Us stores in the Baltimore region.

Discounter Ollie’s was selected to purchase stores on Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie and in Valley Mall in Hagerstown, according to documents filed Wednesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond, Va.

A bid for Toys R Us in Tollgate Marketplace in Bel Air was awarded to center landlord RPAI, court documents show. Ollie’s was picked as a backup bidder for the Bel Air store.

All bids require bankruptcy court approval. A court hearing on the sales is set for June 25 in Richmond.

Bids were awarded in the June 11 auction for a total of 53 Toys R Us locations across the U.S. to both landlords and retailers. Other retailers besides Ollie’s that plan to take over toy store space include Big Lots, Scandinavian Designs, Ashley Furniture and Burlington.

In the Baltimore region, Ollie’s has stores in Dundalk, Jessup, Aberdeen and on Liberty Road in Baltimore.
