Baltimore Sun

Mary Washington best choice for Senate in 43rd

- Dimitri Digbeu Jr., Baltimore

The Baltimore Sun’s endorsement of long-time incumbent Joan Carter Conway for Baltimore City’s 43rd District is a disappointing display of propping up undue power over democracy, health, equity and the environment. The policies that Del. Mary Washington is running on are people-powered and progressive ideals and should be taken seriously. The line of thinking that we should play defense when it comes to our representation and safeguard a politician who has failed to serve her constituents time and time again in the name of keeping a seat is simply undemocratic. In a world where we vote safely rather than enthusiastically, we risk everything.

After years of twisted politics and behind-the-scenes games, Ms. Conway’s symbolic power should finally be put to bed and upgraded for Ms. Washington’s genuine leadership, hard work and relentless dedication to fight for the people rather than Big Money. The Sun is right: Delegate Washington’s work around water affordability, tax sale reform, Baltimore city schools and countless other issues has been groundbreaking. She is indeed posing a tough, and real, challenge to Ms. Conway, and is coming in strong with a powerhouse of impassioned volunteers and high-level endorsements. She has proven unparalleled dedication to the people of her district, and there is no reason to believe she would not deliver when it comes to standing up against Senate leadership. I look forward to voting for Mary Washington to represent Baltimore’s District 43 this coming Tuesday.
