21 from Baltimore area invited to U19 lax tryouts
Twenty-one players from the Baltimore area are among 109 invited to try out this summer for the 2019 U.S. women’s U19 national team, US Lacrosse announced Wednesday. The players, representing 16 states, were selected from more than 500 applicants. Tryouts will be held at US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks on Aug. 10-12. For the first time, players who have completed a year of college were eligible to be selected, though none of those players came from the Baltimore area. Most of the players, 48, just completed their senior year in high school. The Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s U19 World Championship will be held Aug. 1-10, 2019, in Peterborough, Ontario. MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Former Big Ten Conference Player of the Year and consensus AllAmerican A.J. Guyton has joined coach Tavaras Hardy’s coaching staff as an assistant at Loyola Maryland. Guyton served as Northwestern’s director of player development last season. A native of Peoria, Ill., Guyton was named the Big Ten Player of the Year as a senior in 2000 at Indiana, where he culminated a standout career with 2,100 points to go with 429 rebounds, 403 assists and129 steals. — making their debut.
Former Bills GM Doug Whaley is taking over as the NFL Players Association’s director of college scouting. Whaley, will oversee the recruitment, evaluation and selection of draft-eligible prospects to compete at the annual NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. … The home of the Broncos will be known as “Broncos Stadium at Mile High” while the team continues to look for a new naming-rights sponsor. The team announced the temporary name change following a vote by the district that oversees the taxpayer-built stadium.
Predators F Austin Watson, who was arrested Saturday on a charge of domestic assault, was released from jail on $4,500 bound and is scheduled to appear in court June 28. … The Maple Leafs signed D Connor Carrick to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.
French Open champion Simona Halep has withdrawn from next week’s Nature Valley International grass-court tournament. The top-ranked Halep said in a statement that she felt Achilles tendon pain and inflammation during her title run in Paris “and it has yet to fully recover.” … Top-seeded Marin Cilic set up a quarterfinal match with Sam Querrey by coming from a set down to beat Gilles Muller 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen’s Club in London. Fifth-seeded Querrey beat Stan Wawrinka 7-5, 6-7, 6-1. … Yuichi Sugita of Japan upset third-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-2, 7-5 at the grass-court Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. The 52nd-ranked Sugita advanced to a quarterfinal against American Denis Kudla.
