McNally pitches Orioles-record 27th shutout, 4-0 over Yankees
JUNE 24, 1983: Al Kaline, a Hall of Fame outfielder from Southern High, visits the Babe Ruth Museum on Emery Street during a trip to Baltimore. Kaline played 22 years for Detroit and is now a broadcaster for the Tigers.
JUNE 26, 1979: Led by 11 walks and Ken Singleton’s seventh-inning home run, the American League East-leading Orioles score their 17th victory in the past 19 games, 4-3 over the Cleveland Indians at Memorial Stadium.
JUNE 27, 1973: Dave McNally pitches his 27th shutout — a club record — as the second-place Orioles defeat the frontrunning New York Yankees, 4-0, on 33rd Street.
JUNE 29, 1963: Two Colts draft picks star in the Coaches’ All-America Game in Buffalo, N.Y. Willie Richardson, a receiver from Jackson State, makes a 28-yard touchdown catch, and Syracuse’s John Mackey rushes five times for 37 yards and gains 29 yards on four receptions in the East’s 22-21 loss to the West.
JUNE 27, 1948: Donald Warthen, 9, of Violetville wins the second annual Eastern Community Council Soapbox Derby. More than 2,000 onlookers cheer along the four-block course on Fleet Street, between Linwood and Lakewood ave- nues.
JUNE 29, 1930: Joe Hauser hits two home runs — Nos. 25 and 26 — as the Orioles rout the Bears in Newark, 15-5. Hauser, a first baseman, will finish with 63 homers, an International League record.
JUNE 25, 1925: A homing pigeon entered in a race from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Baltimore, lands instead on the Washington windowsill of the National Press Club and won’t budge. Reporters find the owner’s name on the bird’s leg band and send the pigeon to Charles Goeb of Foster Avenue in East Baltimore.
JUNE 28, 1897: Against the New York Giants, Orioles shortstop Hughie Jennings is beaned by Amos Rusie, the hardest-throwing pitcher in the National League. Jennings stays in the game for another inning, though “staggering about the field like a drunken man,” The Sun reports. “Even when ordered to stop playing by a doctor, he refused and had to be led off the field.” Four days later, Jennings returns to the lineup.

JUNE 29, 1863: Wilbert Robinson, Hall of Fame catcher for the Orioles’ threetime National League champions of the 1890s. Robinson died in 1934.
