UMBC’s Lyles joins Jazz’s Summer League team

The Utah Jazz added former UMBC men’s basketball guard Jairus Lyles to their NBA Summer League team. Lyles is the first Retriever to compete on a team in the12 years that the NBAhas sponsored summer play. Lyles led UMBC to the 2017-18 America East Conference title, scoring 27 points, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat Vermont, 6562. Six days later, he made nine of 11 field-goal tries and scored 28 points as the Retrievers became the first men’s No. 16 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed in a 74-54 NCAA tournament win over Virginia. BOWLING: The 45th anual National Duckpin Youth Championsh­ips will be held today at 10 a.m, at Bowlmor AMF Dundalk. Twenty-four teams of four bowlers each in four age divisions will bowl three games to determine the champions. Participat­ing teams, which won state and regional qualifying tournament­s in the spring, are from Maryland, Connecticu­t, Rhode Island and Virginia. In addition to team and individual honors, four $500 scholarshi­ps are awarded at the tournament. In the Baltimore area, the eight teams participat­ing are from Glen Burnie, AMF Dundalk and Parkville Lanes. WOMEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Hailey Rubino, an outside hitter from Leesburg, Va., has transferre­d to Maryland and will be eligible to play for the Terps this season. Rubino spent last season at New Mexico, where she started in all 28 matches she played in, finishing fourth on the team in kills (178) and digs (216). MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: Left-hander Zach Matson was promoted from Short-A Aberdeen to High-A Frederick. WOMEN’S PRO SOCCER: The Washington Spirit has signed midfielder Maddie Huster. Huster, a rookie from Wake Forest University, was a thirdround selection in the 2018 National Women's Soccer League College Draft by Washington. She previously made the NWSL roster as a National Team Replacemen­t Player during the FIFA window earlier this month. — million in 2018-19. ... The Pistons added assistant coaches Sidney Lowe and Sean Sweeney to Dwane Casey’s staff.

Eagles LB Nigel Bradham was suspended for the 2018 season opener against the Falcons for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The suspension is related to Bradham’s July 2016 arrest for assaulting a hotel employee in Miami. ... Colts RB Robert Turbin was suspended without pay for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL policy on performanc­e-enhancers.

When Barry Trotz resigned, the Capitals didn’t even bother with a coaching search. Top assistant Todd Reirden will take over the Stanley Cup champions. ... D Michal Kempny re-signed with the Capitals for $10 million over four years. Kempny came over at the trade deadline from the Blackhawks for a 2018 thirdround draft pick. ... D Drew Doughty agreed to an eight-year, $88 million contract extension through the 2026-27 season to stay with the Kings. Doughty won the Norris Trophy as the league’s best defenseman in 2016.

Serena Williams avoided any early matchups against opponents with success to speak of at Wimbledon in a draw that could put her against No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina in the third round. Williams missed last year’s tournament while pregnant. Despite being ranked outside the top 150, she is seeded 25th based on past success, which includes seven Wimbledon titles. Simona Halep was awarded the top seed. On the men’s side, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the top two seeds.
